Treatment suitability guide

Suitability is personal.

A treatment that may be appropriate for one person may not be appropriate for another. Rachel is an NMC registered nurse, and treatment suitability is determined individually after consultation, based on the service being considered and the information available at that time.

This guide is educational and non-diagnostic. It cannot determine whether a treatment is suitable for you, approve a procedure or replace advice from an appropriate healthcare professional.

What is considered

More than a single concern.

An individual assessment may consider:

  • your goals, expectations and reasons for considering treatment;
  • relevant medical conditions, medicines and allergies;
  • pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent illness or planned procedures where relevant;
  • previous treatments, reactions and current skin or tissue health;
  • whether the likely limitations, risks and aftercare are acceptable to you; and
  • whether postponing, declining or referring is the safer option.

These points are not a self-screening checklist. Suitability can change, and accurate information should be shared at every consultation.

Possible outcomes

A consultation may end with no treatment.

The next step may be more time to consider, a different non-prescription option, advice to speak with another healthcare professional, postponement or no treatment. If a prescription decision is needed, a separate appropriate prescriber must assess and decide whether that option is clinically appropriate.
